Beyond Place and Time: Reading Raven Stories

In connection with the Arts Council of Princeton artist residency of Tlingit artist and National Heritage Fellow Nathan Jackson, I’ll describe some of the Tlingit art that has been in Princeton since the 19th century and how that art connects to the Tlingit Raven Cycle, an oral literature believed to be approximately 2,000 years old. The Tlingit raven conveys intergenerational memory, combining the qualities of trickster and cultural hero while bridging human and other-than-human worlds. These character traits inform the “Raven and Fog Woman” story that will appear on the totem pole that Jackson is completing in the Arts Council of Princeton's Sands Gallery.
